PLASTIC

Updated: Nov 6, 2019

At the Serpentine, at the Thames in Oxford, there is an annual clean-up, usually bringing out of the water all manner of items plastic, mostly deformed. Way upstream in the Thames, at Hannington Bridge, when swimming in the Thames Festival, bringing water from the source, we found a plastic inflatable crocodile, which I attached to my wetsuit and swam with. The crocodile accompanied us, the Swim the Thames Group, in the final non-tidal Thames swim to Teddington too. There is plastic everywhere, but in the water it looks worse than anywhere. In Bologna this Summer, there was a chilling exhibition about plastic waste, chilling because the amount that is dumped and its implications for ecology huge. The beautiful images made it attractive and repulsive at the same time. I am sure that was the intention.
